Let us summarize what we have said about the creation of the world of form. The ascended masters teach that the material universe exists within the latest in a series of spheres created in the original void. Each sphere has been created with a more dense vibration than the previous ones, which means we live in what is the most dense sphere created so far. The importance is that when spiritual beings take on physical bodies on earth, we go through a dramatic shift in how we perceive our surroundings.

Take for example the common perception that we live in a world of solid matter. As we have said earlier, matter is not solid at all; it is made from vibrating energy. Yet the perception apparatus of our physical bodies simply cannot detect the vibrations, and thus “matter” appears solid and difficult to change.

As we have said, we descend in order to help raise the vibration of our sphere, until it too becomes part of the spiritual realm. And as a sphere is raised, the vibration of “matter” becomes less dense, meaning matter will appear less solid, more etherial. Right now, planet earth is at a rather low vibration, but as it is raised, it will become possible, even with the bodily senses, to perceive that matter is not self-existing. It is indeed made from finer energies, which means this world is an extension of a higher world, not a self-contained unit.

When we enter a physical body, we inevitably go through a certain “forgetting,” where we lose awareness of who we really are as spiritual beings. There is nothing wrong or sinister about this, as it is indeed part of the design. As we have seen, the purpose of the world of form is the growth in self-awareness of individual extensions of the Creator. We grow by starting out with a limited sense of Self and then gradually expanding it.

Descending into this dense material world is indeed a major growth opportunity. We are meant to come here and lose awareness of ourselves as spiritual beings. However, in the ideal scenario, we will never lose the sense that we are connected to something outside the sense of self we have in this world. We will never forget that we are extensions of something greater, and we will never lose our longing back to the greater sense of self we had before we descended.

Descending into a limited sense of self is indeed an opportunity to expand the greater Self. When we descend, we take on a sense of self that is adapted to the conditions we find in this world. As mentioned, the senses of the physical body make matter appear solid and difficult to change, and that makes it seem believable that we are limited by the conditions in the matter world. It is by gradually awakening from this limited sense of self – and gaining mastery over the matter realm – that we grow in self-awareness.

As will be explained in more detail later, the growth in self-awareness is only possible because we have free will. So the Self that descends into the material world does indeed have free will. Yet in exercising our free will, we must do so based on our current perception. Thus, once we have descended into the material realm, we begin to make decisions based on the sense of self and the perception we have in this world—as opposed to the much broader perspective we had as spiritual beings.

This opens up the possibility that we can begin to make decisions based on the perception or belief that matter does have power over us. We can therefore gradually build a sense of self that causes us to lose the sense that we are connected to something greater. We can gradually forget our longing for another realm beyond the material, and we can even begin to deny that we are spiritual beings, accepting a disempowering sense of self, such as that we are sinners by nature or evolved apes. We can begin to either believe that we cannot rise above this world by the power of Self or that we have no power of Self, because we are products of the material world and thus have no power over it.
