The ascended masters teach that there are three basic states of consciousness available to self-aware beings: the consciousness of Christ, the consciousness of ignorance and the consciousness of anti-christ. Take note that to the ascended masters, the term “Christ” is completely universal and beyond the way it is used by mainstream Christianity. Christ is the most basic state of consciousness, and it was defined by the Creator because it knew the potential of giving self-aware beings free will.

We live in a world of form, which means this world is defined by forms that are distinct. However, there is a fundamental difference between seeing forms as distinct and seeing them as separate. In reality, everything in the world of form is created out of the Being, the energy, of the Creator. Thus, behind the appearances of distinct forms, there is an underlying oneness, namely the Creator’s Being and consciousness.

In an ascended sphere, it is quite obvious that no form is self-existing. Thus, beings in the ascended realm are directly experiencing that every form is made from a finer substance, which ultimately goes back to the Creator’s Being. Yet in an unascended sphere, the vibration of the base “matter” is still so low, that a being who is inside that sphere cannot perceive – through what we call the physical senses – that there is an underlying oneness behind all forms. That is why a new self-aware being starts out with a point-like sense of self, in which it sees itself as a distinct self living in a world of distinct forms that are not the self.

A new self-aware being is actually an extension of the Creator’s Being, but when we descend into an unascended sphere, we forget this and come to identity ourselves as products of our sphere. This “forgetting” is meant to give us contrast, so that we learn to fully appreciate oneness. Yet we can, of course, only appreciate oneness when we get back to it, and what makes it possible for us to get back to oneness is the Christ consciousness. The Christ consciousness is the original state of consciousness out of which every form is created, meaning that the Christ consciousness is meant to maintain oneness between the Creator and its creation.

When a self-aware being is first created, we are in a state of ignorance, because we do not see that we are extensions of the Creator and that all distinct forms came from the Creator. In the ideal scenario, we will gradually overcome our ignorance and build a new sense of self based on the realization of the oneness of all life. This new self will be built based on the Christ consciousness, which means we grow from ignorance to knowledge, from seeing ourselves as distinct beings to seeing ourselves as extensions of the Creator. We are all meant to grow from ignorance to the fullness of Christhood, in which we see ourselves as one with our source and one with all life.

Yet we do, of course, grow by making free choices. Having a will that is completely free means we have the option to go against this basic growth process. Instead of willingly transcending a limited sense of self, we can choose to hold on to such a sense of self. Yet even though we are distinct beings, we are not separate beings. We are all extensions of the Creator’s Being, which means that all self-aware beings in an unascended sphere are connected in a giant web of life.

The basic fact is that in our unascended sphere, most self-aware beings are following the path to Christhood, and they have created an upward momentum that pulls on all self-aware beings. There are some beings who are not yet on the path to Christhood, which means they have to resist the upward momentum. And what makes it possible to resist the growth towards oneness is the consciousness of anti-christ.

When you go into the consciousness of anti-christ, you deliberately deny the underlying oneness of all life. When you are in ignorance, you simply do not see this oneness, but when you go into the consciousness of anti-christ, you deliberately deny oneness. The consciousness of anti-christ literally forms a filter, and once you look at life through that filter, you see only differences and separateness. You see that the forms in our world are not simply distinct, they are completely separate.

This can lead to many different forms of the denial of oneness. For example, in the western world we have mainstream Christianity, which portrays the world as having two completely separate spheres, namely the matter world and heaven. God is a remote being “up there” in heaven, and you are separated from God’s kingdom. We also have scientific materialism, which says that the material world is all there is. There is nothing outside the material realm, which means that matter is self-existing; it is not made form any finer substance and was not created by any self-aware being.

Let us now consider what makes the denial of oneness possible and why it is so difficult to overcome the consciousness of anti-christ.
